If you have ever wondered through the garden and thought, wow, that flower looks good enough to eat! Maybe you can!
Flowers have shown up on plates created not only by master chefs but anyone looking to add a fanciful dash of colour or an unusual flavour. Edible flower petals have adorned salads, and desserts for centuries. In fact, many cocktails have been made and named using edible petals. Some you have been enjoying for years without even thinking about it like, Kale, Chives, or Mint for instance. But maybe if you're adventurous you also find Borage, Nasturtium, or Calendula to your liking.
Absolutely you have to be careful as some flowers are poisonous for humans and sometimes your pets. Positively identifying your flower type is always a safer bet.
They are best picked fresh the day you want to use them in a dish, and the morning when the flower is at its most hydrated state.. You can reinvigorate the petals by soaking in cold water before serving if they wilt on you a little bit. Your food will never look better.
Day Three of our Twenty-Four Straight Days of Giveaways features 5 packages of gourmet Edible Flower Seeds. That’s right, some of our best edibles for your garden are flowers.
This prize pack consists of
Calendula Cantaloupe the perfect addition to scrambled eggs, a summer salsa. or dried for the perfect cup of tea.
Autumn’s Palette Amaranth, leaves are a tasty treat added to salad or the seeds are a nutrition protein packed grain.
Bachelors Buttons Jazzy Mix, are beautiful in a pop of colour in a salad.
Snapdragon Madame Butterfly Mix, honestly not the tastiest of the bunch but edible all the same. We love them in a vase.

I had no idea that snap dragons were edible! Last year my daughter asked for a flower cake, very fitting, so we used the edible options we had available in our garden to decorate the cake with. It was a hit! I will definitely keep in mind that snap dragons can be part of it all next round.

Flowers are meant to be shared so looking forward to planting a cutting garden in the spring. Started some of my own flowers the last two years so decided to invest in a seed starting Light System and heat mat to get a jump start on the growing season.

Well I love edible flowers in food or in an arrangement but my very favourite thing is to give some to my 5 year old daughter and watch her carefully disassemble them and mix them up in her sand sand toys. She is always challenging her 4 year old brother to bake offs so while I’m weeding they come to me as their judge and I “taste test” all their colourful sandy concoctions :)
