24 Days of Giveaways - Day 12 Jennifer Jewell

 The earth in her hands

What does it even mean to be a woman in plants?  Jennifer Jewell started to answer this question in her book, The Earth in Her Hands, but came away with something much more. Taking off from her popular podcast, Cultivating Place, Jennifer shows the diverse ways in which horticulture intersects with our everyday world and on women whose work has enriched and expanded those intersections.

Jennifer introduces 75 inspiring women from botany, floral design, landscape architecture, farming, herbalism, and food justice.  Yolanda Burrell of Pollinate Farm & Garden, for instance, shares the joys of urban agriculture. She reminds us that, “giving others access to the resources and knowledge to grow their own food is really about teaching them not to forget how”.  Yolanda runs a skill sharing group in Oakland California, where she informs others on how to grow, in an effort to stay out of the “food swamps”, like fast food joints and gas station type food marts.

Tiffany Freeman is an acupuncturist and clinical herbalist from Calgary.  Jennifer showcases Tiffany’s desire to integrate traditional Chinese medicine and Indigineous plant based knowledge in her clinical and educational work.  Again repeating her theme of how interconnected growing is, and how all these 75 women are dedicated to sharing their knowledge by passing down to the next generation.
