"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You'll Go
Each of my children has their own copy of the book, Oh, The Places You Will Go.
It is full of Suess wisdom that my kids can understand. No boundaries, or limitations, to think about, just make room for a dream; any dream.
Every so often, we get an email from someone, or somebody who is at our farm cutting their own bouquet, will say, “I’ve always dreamt of growing flowers for bouquets to give to my friends and I wanted to come and see what it is like”.
Encouraging people to get into flowers is always on my list because I know what it can bring to your life. And sharing your own cut flowers on any scale will bring happiness to. It can sadden me when people can’t find a way to take that first step...So a part of me always blurts out, “why don’t you start today?”
For all the people out there dreaming of growing cut flowers to make bouquets to bring happiness to others, let this be the first day of the rest of your life. Starting today, give yourself permission to try. You already grow a few things right? You already love flowers right? My fist step took a bit of a push from my husband.he built some raised beds and then fenced it in with cedar fencing and chicken wire and purchased seeds for me. I am enjoying it so much! Even named it Hills View Garden ( my father owned a flower shop when I was a baby and its name was Hillsview Florist and Garden Center.

There’s some wonderful replies here! The most courageous step my husband and I have taken is starting our own business (a small cattle ranch in Central BC). We left a well established ranch a few years ago to start our own operation. Now I’m taking the leap into starting a cut flower garden for 2022 and couldn’t be more excited/scared!

Last June, I had a colleague reach out to check in on me and see how I was doing. She had no idea how much I appreciated someone noticing me and checking in. Later that week, I had my first cut bouquet ready to go with some lilies, bachelor’s buttons and baby’s breath. I immediately knew who I wanted to take it to. I was able to say thank you in a personal and meaningful way.

My mom always had big beautiful gardens but as her knees have gotten worse over the years she’s started to take them out as they are too hard for her to maintain. I love bringing her flowers from my garden or even the grocery store to fill her table.
