Continue ShoppingIt’s been so long now that I don’t even recall how I became a Sarah Raven admirer. I remember flipping through Adam Nicolson’s Perch Hill and saying out loud, “this is what I am talking about, this is the dream!”...And I am absolutely sure over the last two decades Adam and Sarah have inspired thousands to follow along with them, and to strike out on your own.
Sarah’s no stranger to writing books, in fact Sarah has even penned a veggie cookbook that afforded her the accolade of Cookery Book of the Year in 2008 by the Guild of the Food Writers. It made perfect sense to me that as a grower you would take the next steps and use your veg and herbs in recipes that you could share. I think of it like an ecosystem, where you plan your seeding based on the final food dishes you intend to make.
In Sarah’s newest book, Sarah Raven's A Year Full of Flowers: Gardening for all seasons, she shows once again why she is the go-to source for bringing life to your garden all year round. Sarah doles out advice and inspiration is giant heaps as she walks you down the path of what to look for and care for each month of the year. I have recommended books before that I think any gardener should have handy on the shelf, and this is one of the best. And with amazing photography from Jonathan Buckley, who has worked with Sarah on many projects you may want to leave this book out on the coffee table for all to enjoy.
If you’ve read Sarah’s work you’ll recognize her hallmark touch points of colour and scent as important attributes of her garden, and here she shows you again how to establish a beautiful living and breathing space. Her talents are large and seemingly endless.
This must have book is the giveaway on Day 16 of our 24 Days of Giveaways, Sarah Raven’s A Full Year of Flowers. And to give you the ambiance you need to soak it all in, a pair of flower dyed socks from Silk and Sumac, a Good Vibes Mug, and Tea from Clearview Tea Company. There, we just gave you the perfect excuse to escape and find your garden dream.

My Dad. He was a florist by trade..it has taken a long time to discover I have the same interests as he did. I think he would be quite pleased.

My teenaged daughter fell in love with flower gardening last year so that was my encouragement to persue cut flowers. Also after having surgery to improve my health after 12 years of searching for answers has given me a new chance at life. We picked wildflowers along the sides of our dirt roads, go to the greenhouses together and plan for our upick flower farm.

I attended a foraged flowers workshop hosted by Amy Merrick and it opened my eyes to the beauty held in the creative art form of flowers. I do all sorts of artsy things and amazingly I hadn’t mentally made the connection that flowers can be a medium for artistic expression before that point. Essentially that day was life changing!

Kristen from Shifting Roots in Saskatoon, was the person who gave me the courage and knowledge to try growing my first cutting garden. It’s funny that I am so grateful to someone that I’ve never met, but she truly has made my life richer and more beautiful. Coincidently, she is also the person who recommended Stems Flower Farm as a great Canadian source for seeds.
