Continue ShoppingEvery once in a while we veer from buying books on how to grow better flowers and discover a book about blooms that absolutely leaves us breathless. Victoria BC's Christin Geall recently published Cultivated: The Elements of Floral Style, and WOW, this one is stunning!
Christin has wrapped her many talents together; artist, floral designer, photographer and writer, culminating in one of the most beautiful books on flowers you will ever find. In it, Christin explains how deep ecology can produce a profound connection to floral arrangements. You can tell Christin is a writer immediately when you dive into this book, her words dance on the page. The photography grips you like a walk through an art museum featuring the Dutch Golden Age masters. You will be awed at the final product, amazed at the clear teaching, and soothed by the way Christin walks and talks you through how to create in her own footsteps. And Canadian too!
Regardless of your calling in flowers, this book should be on your bookshelf, it will bring such excitement and inspiration to your craft. We consider this book one of the best on the subject, so, Day 6 of our Twenty-Four Days of Giveaways is Cultivated: The Elements of Floral Style, along with three packages of seed to start your own inspirational cut flower garden. We have chosen Oban Bay Sweet Peas, Love in a Puff and Cup and Saucer Vine as three examples of beautiful flowers that are less traditional bouquet additions, but stunning when presented in unexpected ways.

The past couple of months have no doubt been challenging for us all, but as gardeners and flower fanatics I think some solace has been found in the garden. For myself, joy has been found sharing my passion of gardening with my daughter. Showing her how to plant daffodils and garlic in the fall, or holding her up to pick peppers at peak ripeness, has brought many lasting memories of her first growing season. Our two favourite flowers this season were Eryngium ‘Big Blue’ and Stachys byzantina. Both attracted many bees and flying insects to which my daughter would shriek in delight while observing them move about from flower to flower.

I definitely have a connection with marigolds from my Oma’s house and chrysanthemum’s because that’s my middle name. :)

Since March we have chosen “to confine” at our country house. For the first time I was able to see the plants at all stages which is very inspiring. This quiet and daily observation has given me better insight as to the additions and changes I want to bring about. Too many projects in mind….
