My mother was also a gardener, as was her mother before her. I am the youngest of 4 daughters and one year for Christmas I felt left out, everyone else had opened their gifts and nothing remained under the tree…my mother left the room and came back down the hall pushing a wheelbarrow filled with soil, seeds, gloves, tools and all the wonderful things to make beautiful flower gardens! I was THRILLED! The next 5 months were painstakingly long while I waited for the snow to melt so I could begin turning these flower-filled dreams into reality! That one gift nourished a lifetime of happiness through gardening!

Last year my husband made me a flower press! Now this is not your ordinary 4 point flower press made with plywood and twist nuts. He is a woodworker and he designed me a crank style press with moveable plate that was turned up and down by a large round handle. It is beautiful to look at and it works wonderfully for pressing flowers. I keep it on display in my studio and am reminded every day of the love that went into that gift. This year my ultimate gardening gift would be a camera tripod with a horizontal arm so that I can take better pictures of my flowers. I love to document all the beauty that comes from my garden each year and a tripod would make it so much easier!

My favourite gardening gift that I ever received is a practical one – the root slayer! Last Christmas, I got a shovel with serrated edges from my mom. It’s helped me to get control of the gardens on my property – the gardens had been ignored for about 20 years. I put in a cutting garden last summer and I’m currently perusing seed catalogues, dreaming of all of the flowers that I’ll start in the spring. Lisianthus, dahlias and snapdragons are on the top of my list!
