What does it even mean to be a woman in plants? Jennifer Jewell started to answer this question in her book, The Earth in Her Hands, but came away with something much more. Taking off from her popular podcast, Cultivating Place, Jennifer shows the diverse ways in which horticulture intersects with our everyday world and on women whose work has enriched and expanded those intersections.
Jennifer introduces 75 inspiring women from botany, floral design, landscape architecture, farming, herbalism, and food justice. Yolanda Burrell of Pollinate Farm & Garden, for instance, shares the joys of urban agriculture. She reminds us that, “giving others access to the resources and knowledge to grow their own food is really about teaching them not to forget how”. Yolanda runs a skill sharing group in Oakland California, where she informs others on how to grow, in an effort to stay out of the “food swamps”, like fast food joints and gas station type food marts.
Tiffany Freeman is an acupuncturist and clinical herbalist from Calgary. Jennifer showcases Tiffany’s desire to integrate traditional Chinese medicine and Indigineous plant based knowledge in her clinical and educational work. Again repeating her theme of how interconnected growing is, and how all these 75 women are dedicated to sharing their knowledge by passing down to the next generation.

My grandmother Muzz was (she just passed) my inspiration for starting my cut flower farm. I see her in the
beauty of the blooms that I share with others.

It was important to me to grow a veggie garden when my kids were small, so they would know the joy of eating peas, beans, carrots and tomatoes straight from the garden. But with the pressures of a full time job, maintaining a home while raising kids, the general upkeep of the garden (weeding!!) was overwhelming to me, and I reluctantly gave it up. Fast forward to a few years ago when my girls begged me to start another garden, promising to help, and I said ok. This past summer, we enjoyed an abundance of the same veggies they enjoyed as small children, with the added bonus of beautiful flowers, mostly grown from seeds bought from Edgebrook Farm ❤️

My Father was definitely my role model and sparked my interest in gardening. And I’ve had a veggie garden and have grown flowers for years. But fower farming? I had no idea that even existed till this year! And now I am having sooooo much fun reading about and learning from all the flower farmers (most of whom are women) across this country 💮🌸🇨🇦🌿🍃 Closer to home I am inspired by Boreal Blooms, J.Lynn Florels, Farm Fresh Florals, and Alberta Girl Acres, to name a few. Further afield…your farm😊, Christin Geall, Lucy at Johnny Crows Garden, Francoise Weeks…I could go on! Never have I ever been more grateful for the internet than in 2020! Stuck at home with time to learn about flowers. I am so fortunate and grateful 😊

I have worked for and alongside numerous women farmers and they have all inspired me to grow. They are hardworking badasses and also mentors and caring friends 💖🌱
