One trend that certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed during this pandemic is the number of people who are growing in non-traditional spaces. And by that I mean, for those who don’t have garden space, many have turned to containers and balcony growing. And who can blame you! It really doesn’t take that much room to grow a few favourites, for snacks or salads.
It’s totally doable. The first step in planting a garden on your patio or balcony is to arrange a container or two on your balcony and fill it with soil. Be sure to put a few holes in the bottom of the box for drainage of excess water and something under the container to catch that water. If you don’t have room for a large container, you can grow many things in smaller pots. Once you have completed these steps, you are ready to start planting.
Commonly grown items for small pots and containers are herbs. With the likes of Mint, Rosemary, Cilantro, Parsley, Basil and Tarragon leading the way. Based mostly on size and their ability to perform so well in containers. But you don’t have to stop at just herbs. Most balconies that have some sun would do very well with veggies like Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Peppers, Zucchini, Celery, and of course lots of leafy greens. Imagine just having to step outside of your apartment to grab all the ingredients you need for a fresh salad?
To make it easy to reach out and grab that salad, we are featuring the seeds you need for a Salad Bowl at Your Fingertips on Day Fifteen of Twenty-Four Days of Giveaways. You will receive an awesome eight pack of Lettuce, Cherry Tomatoes, Sweet Peppers, Radish, Greek Oregano, Basil, Kale and Swiss Chard seeds all ready for your fresh salad.

Balcon growing has been most of my gardening experience and it is very surprising how much you can get out of a very small space! I love growing tomatoes, basil, oregano, corriander, and mint!

I love growing tomatoes in my raised beds and herbs in small containers. It’s so rewarding to share your bounty with friends and family.

I love growing a veggie garden every year and consider myself very fortunate to have the land to do so. This year two very special things happened in the garden: In March I returned from Italy with 20 tomato seeds that I had tucked into a paper towel taken from an incredible tomato that I found in META di SORRENTO. I had zero hope for them but thought what could I lose by trying. Well.. all 20 seeds germinated. I gave three seedlings away and kept the rest. By August they had all reached 15 feet in length and stretched up and across the ceiling of our greenhouse producing great quantities of this amazing tomato that tasted just as good as it did in Italy!! We are still eating them fresh plus I have lots frozen!!! Also, after many years of trying, I finally grew great quantities of basil successfully for the first time ever. It took growing it in our raised bed attached to the exterior south wall of our greenhouse. They enjoyed the heat, protection from the wind, and the great drainage. All 50 plants grown from seed produced 26 inch lush, healthy bushes! I spent countless hours making tons of pesto and it was worth every minute 😊🌿🍃
