This year at Stems Flower Farm we grew close to 20,000 dahlias, that’s right, just a little over one acre of the gorgeous blooms that really look impressive in late summer. Over the last three years we have tried to add a hundred or so varieties per year to our field. We presently have around 600 varieties of dahlias. And we aren’t done yet.
Keeping up with dahlia breeding and new varieties is a full time job. Some Dahlia Societies estimate there to be more than 3300 varieties in existence now and with a surging popularity many more get added each season. If you’ve ever wondered where they come from, we have the perfect resource for you. When it comes to introducing new varieties, not many have the same pedigree as Kristine Albrecht, who is an influential dahlia breeder. Kristine has introduced award-winning dahlia varieties that are a must-have for the show circuit and the floral trade.
This book is one of the best on Dahlia breeding that we have found by one of the experts in the field, so, Day Seventeen of our Twenty-Four Days of Giveaways is Dahlia Breeding by Kristine Albrecht. And to add some spice, we are adding a $50 gift voucher for the Stems Flower Farm Dahlia shop.
For a chance to win leave a comment below. In your message share your favourite Dahlia variety, or what growing Dahlias mean to you, anything really, as long as it's meant to pick people up. EASY. This giveaway is open to anyone with a Canadian shipping address. Contest is open December 17th for 24 hours. Closes December 17th at midnight PT. Our Dahlia sale goes live Spring 2021.
Of course, if you know someone who loves Dahlias, please share!

I love all dinner size plate dahlias, but I’m in love with the café au lait. It would be amazing to try a bunch of different varieties. I can just imagine how beautiful your acre of dahlias would look like all in blooms.

My favourite Dahlia has to be Maarn. For me these dahlias have never failed to impress. They are extremely productive, churning out blooms for weeks of soft orange ball type blooms. Pictures do no justice for this dahlia. Especially in the later hours of the day when the sun is going down the colour of Maarn still shines bright.

Also, “All that Jazz”, “Blyton Softer Gleam”, and the Karma line all look amazing. I kept looking at your page and picked more and more that would look AMAZING!! I love anything bright, apricot, orange, creamy or tropical (like a sunset over the ocean looking). I love them all. They are all beautiful 😍😍😍❤💕💚🌿🤗💕

Hello! This is so exciting!! For me dhalias hold such a fun, beautiful, whimsical and exotic feel in the garden. I’ve eyed them for years, and this past summer grew my FIRST yellow dhalias! I’d love to grow “Cafee aunt Lait” and any pink, creamy, or brightly cherry coloured dahlias in the future! They’re so pretty and I want them even more now haha.
I cam believe you have over an acre of dhalias and keep growing 😍😍😍 That’s AMAZING!! I’ve saved my dahlia tubers from this year haha, so best of luck to you too!!
It was so exciting, and seeing bugs, bees, and spiders on them just warmed my heart. I know they would be beautiful for my eyes, but seeing how they interacted with the ecosystem and environment JUST BLEW MY HEART AWAY!!
I’m so excited for this giveaway and will be keeping my fingers crossed 🤞 Thank you; we all need something to look for nowadays in this season. Good thing to all to come.
