Continue ShoppingEvery once in a while we veer from buying books on how to grow better flowers and discover a book about blooms that absolutely leaves us breathless. Victoria BC's Christin Geall recently published Cultivated: The Elements of Floral Style, and WOW, this one is stunning!
Christin has wrapped her many talents together; artist, floral designer, photographer and writer, culminating in one of the most beautiful books on flowers you will ever find. In it, Christin explains how deep ecology can produce a profound connection to floral arrangements. You can tell Christin is a writer immediately when you dive into this book, her words dance on the page. The photography grips you like a walk through an art museum featuring the Dutch Golden Age masters. You will be awed at the final product, amazed at the clear teaching, and soothed by the way Christin walks and talks you through how to create in her own footsteps. And Canadian too!
Regardless of your calling in flowers, this book should be on your bookshelf, it will bring such excitement and inspiration to your craft. We consider this book one of the best on the subject, so, Day 6 of our Twenty-Four Days of Giveaways is Cultivated: The Elements of Floral Style, along with three packages of seed to start your own inspirational cut flower garden. We have chosen Oban Bay Sweet Peas, Love in a Puff and Cup and Saucer Vine as three examples of beautiful flowers that are less traditional bouquet additions, but stunning when presented in unexpected ways.

It’s funny growing up you take for granted some flowers because they were always around like lilacs, gladiolus and sweet peas, now these are three that I look forward to each spring/summer.

I love arranging flowers from the garden. I’m no florist but I try to use unusual plants to add interest to a bouquet. This year I used dahlias, zinnias and asparagus greens to make summer bouquets.

Sunflowers are the flower that bring me the most joy! They radiate beauty, the way the turn to face the sun and always strive to find it amazes me ! On rainy days they turn and face one another to shine brightness on another – I truly believe we should all follow in the steps of sunflowers!! So beautiful!!

This summer I grew dahlias for the first time. I had never even seen one in real life before! It was probably just luck, but my dinnerplate sized blush pink plants produced so many perfect, amazing blooms. It was so special to be able to share them with my grandmother, who is quickly losing her eyesight but could still see those giant flowers.
