Continue ShoppingEvery once in a while we veer from buying books on how to grow better flowers and discover a book about blooms that absolutely leaves us breathless. Victoria BC's Christin Geall recently published Cultivated: The Elements of Floral Style, and WOW, this one is stunning!
Christin has wrapped her many talents together; artist, floral designer, photographer and writer, culminating in one of the most beautiful books on flowers you will ever find. In it, Christin explains how deep ecology can produce a profound connection to floral arrangements. You can tell Christin is a writer immediately when you dive into this book, her words dance on the page. The photography grips you like a walk through an art museum featuring the Dutch Golden Age masters. You will be awed at the final product, amazed at the clear teaching, and soothed by the way Christin walks and talks you through how to create in her own footsteps. And Canadian too!
Regardless of your calling in flowers, this book should be on your bookshelf, it will bring such excitement and inspiration to your craft. We consider this book one of the best on the subject, so, Day 6 of our Twenty-Four Days of Giveaways is Cultivated: The Elements of Floral Style, along with three packages of seed to start your own inspirational cut flower garden. We have chosen Oban Bay Sweet Peas, Love in a Puff and Cup and Saucer Vine as three examples of beautiful flowers that are less traditional bouquet additions, but stunning when presented in unexpected ways.
For a chance to win leave a comment below. This summer was my first year that I grew my own flowers in my garden. Being able to go into my own garden to cut flowers to make arrangements like my mom does and my grandmother did brought me so much joy. Sweet peas, zinnias, and marigolds brought back so many memories.

Something that has brought me joy recently is wandering around our local garden center and looking at the Christmas decorations. They have set up about 50 Christmas trees all with a different theme… one was even upside down and had crystal icicles hanging off of it! I already have enough Christmas decorations at home, but I did buy a little lemon cypress tree :)
That’s another thing that has brought me joy over the past few months of being cooped up inside – having fresh living plants around me.

I have always felt a nostalgia towards lilacs. We always had bushes growing up and the smell always take me back to childhood!

Our advent traditions. We have such a small family, just the three of us, and a few years ago we decided to do a month of celebrations leading up to Christmas. I made an advent calendar with little envelopes to open each day that have a little note inside. Some activity or event that we can do as a family. This year we are heading out to cut down our first real Christmas tree together. It is a little something to look forward to every day all month long.
